About Fayette Nature Preserve

Fayette Nature Preserve is located on the Garden Peninsula in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, bordering Lake Michigan. The preserve protects over 2,200 acres of shoreline, forest, wetlands, and historic buildings that once comprised a bustling industrial company town centered on iron smelting between 1867 and 1891. Today, the site is managed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and includes the restored Fayette Historic Townsite, offering visitors a glimpse into 19th-century iron and limestone industry life. The preserve's natural landscape features hardwood forests, cedar swamps, and alpine-like rocky bluffs, providing diverse habitats for wildlife including black bears, white-tailed deer, migratory birds, and rare plant species. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking through more than 20 miles of well-marked trails, some of which offer panoramic views of Lake Michigan and the rugged shoreline. Fishing and paddling are popular on adjacent waters, and the preserve's peaceful setting is a prime spot for birding and photography. Winter brings snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities. Fayette Nature Preserve also serves as a site for environmental education and preservation efforts, balancing historical interpretation with natural resource protection. Its combination of cultural heritage and natural beauty makes it a unique destination on the Michigan shoreline.
